Embrace Books will be launching ‘Proxima’, a new science fiction and fantasy series, in the spring of 2011.
Proxima stories will reach to the stars as science fiction, explore fantastic and mythic worlds so realistic we could lose ourselves in them, and dare to confront humankind’s deepest fears in the realms of horror, Gothic and the supernatural.

Hi Jane,
Exciting development! Best wishes for a successful ride.
One question: you say “Please note that these stories are not romances. ” Does this rule out alternative history with a romantic element?
Hi Alison
Red Velvet and After dark both allow paranormal and other similar sci-fi-ish romances. But this list at Proxima is not a romance list, so if the romantic element is strong, it may actually be a romance and should go to the romance side of things.
I am not editing Proxima, but I can state with certainty that sci-fi and fantasy stories which contain too high a level of romance are not being sought for this series. This is aimed more at a male readership than a female readership, if you like, though stories which contain romantic elements are allowed. They just mustn’t dominate.
For instance, there are romantic elements in Lord of the Rings, but it’s not by any stretch of the imagination a romance. It’s a fantasy with romantic elements. So if it’s more romance than fantasy, it will need to go in as a romance submission, not for Proxima.
Hope that’s helpful. Thanks for commenting!
